Melodies of “Esther, Sweet Esther” at The National Press Club
Review by Malcolm Lewis Barnes, Parity Press:
“Esther, Sweet Esther” – Black Virgin
The Old Testament Book of Esther tells the story of a young Jewish girl who had a dream that she would fulfill a great destiny. Kyaunnee Richardson personified that innocent virgin princess and future Queen of Persia and filled The National Press Club stage with a powerful presence and clear commanding voice in the starring role of Esther!
‘Storyteller’ and Director, Jeremiah Ginsberg, told the story of his wife, Wendy, insisting that since we had a President who was a lover of Israel that they had to do something now to launch a production of Esther. For those of you who may have forgotten your Sunday School lessons, King Ahasuerus was so displeased with his first wife who refused to join him at a banquet that he divorced her and auditioned for a new Queen and called to ‘Bring In the Virgins,’ to which Esther replied, “The King would never marry me because I’m… Jewish,” as the audience wanted to finish the thought of a beautiful Nubian princess saying, ‘Black.’
When Ginsberg received a LinkedIn invitation from legendary Publicist, Jan Du Plain, the first PR Director of Ford’s Theater, he knew that “GOD had spoken!”
“Esther, Sweet Esther” was a One-Night-Only musical send up that took political pot shots at… Hitler and included HIP HOP eunuchs wearing backward baseball caps… The ensemble cast of 10 extraordinary voices featuring Stephen Len White as the King; George Comtois as Mordecai; and Ed Sullivan look-a-like Christopher Regan as the Villainous Haman, with a live trio delivered a memorable performance in search of a theatrical run that will take it all the way to Broadway. #SweetEstherBroadwayBound
